About

Welcome to Make it with Kate!

A place for all things home projects, DIY decor, crafts, woodworking and more!

Here you can find a mixture of ideas, but predominately Modern Farmhouse and Modern Colonial DIY home decor mixed in with Dollar Tree Crafts 🙂

I like to craft and create for a few reasons:

  1. Making inexpensive and budget friendly versions of coveted goods make gives me great satisfaction.
  2. Turning recycled or ‘old’ goods and products into something new gets my creative juices flowing.
  3. My grandpa was a great craftsman and enjoyed woodworking, and when I create with wood, I feel like I am with him.

I grew up in a small town in California. When I try to explain what I used to do for fun growing up, it goes a little something like this:

We had this old pile of telephone poles off the path going to the pond. My brother and I used to spend summers trying to build a raft out of them that would float. It never did, but we loved trying!

My dad and I used to chop up those telephone poles and build birdhouses out of them. It was one of my favorite things to do.

These are truly among some of my most cherished memories.

Each time I used to visit my grandparents, my grandpa would take me down to his shop and show off some tools that he found at yard sales, the wood that he found outside to create with, or his most recent creations.

I was in awe each and every time.

He passed away a few years ago, and his home burnt down in a California wildfire shortly thereafter.

When I build now, I put on one of his flannel shirts, close my eyes, and am transported back to his shop with the smell of sawdust and visions of belt sanders and table saws in my head.

After each project, no matter how good or bad it is, I know he would have loved it.

So, join me on my adventures as I build, recycle, craft and create in the home I share with my husband and our three rambunctious kids!

And if you see me in my Instastories behind the scenes wearing a blue flannel shirt, you’ll know why 🙂
